Yogyakarta, July 2, 2025 — In a significant move to support the national agenda for the protection and utilization of intellectual property (IP), Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN Sunan Kalijaga) Yogyakarta officially established a collaboration with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. This initiative was marked by the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) and the hosting of a public lecture titled “The Protection of Intellectual Property Rights.”
The event, held at the PAU Building Meeting Room from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, was attended by university leaders from several prominent institutions. Joining the signing ceremony were Prof. Dr. Ir. Paiman, M.P., Rector of Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta; Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K)., Ph.D., Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada; Prof. Dr. Sumaryanto, M.Kes., AIFO., Rector of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta; Prof. Noorhaidi, S.Ag., M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga; and Ir. Razilu, M.Si., CGCAE, representing the DGIP.
This collaboration represents a concrete effort by universities to enhance the capacity of academic communities in the areas of innovation, research, and intellectual property protection. Through the agreement, the universities will receive extensive support from DGIP, including educational programs, training sessions, facilitation for IP registration, and opportunities for collaborative, IP-based research.
In his address, Prof. Noorhaidi emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that it ensures the intellectual work and innovations of lecturers, students, and researchers are not only recognized but also legally protected. This message reflects a growing awareness of the strategic value of safeguarding intellectual outputs in the academic environment.
The event also marked the inauguration of the Intellectual Property Center (Sentra HKI) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, which is designed to serve as a central hub for managing and supporting the legal registration of IP within the university community. The center is expected to play a vital role in assisting academic staff and students in navigating the IP process, while also fostering greater awareness of the importance of legal protection for innovations.
This strategic collaboration aims to build a stronger synergy between universities and government agencies, establishing a supportive ecosystem for research and innovation that is both sustainable and legally secure. In his remarks during the document handover session, Ir. Razilu reiterated DGIP’s commitment to working closely with higher education institutions as key partners in advancing intellectual property development. He affirmed that the future of the nation depends greatly on how it values and protects the ideas born from academic excellence.
The event served as a powerful reminder that protecting intellectual property is not merely an administrative task, but a fundamental part of advancing knowledge, innovation, and national competitiveness.
